The competition features Jack & Jills and Stirctly’s that involve more improv dancing done with a set partner or one that you are paired up with. Each dance, Lindy Hop and Balboa, had an Open competition for every dancer to enter and a more advanced, or Champions, level that you have to qualify for earlier in the year at another dance events. There were many of the worlds top Lindy Hoppers fighting for 8 spots in the finals! Five of those top spots were already filled by those who had competed and won in those other events. So there were about 13 couples fighting in the prelims for 3 spots in the finals, CRAZY I KNOW! In the end it was 4 of Hot Clubs Stomps very own member that made the finals: Nick Williams (high flying air steps), Laura Keat (fancy feet), Nikki Marvin (pretty dress) and Mikey Pedroza (puffy sleeves). The same 2 couples of Laura & Nick and Nikki and Mikey, competed in the Classic Lindy Hop division. which is choreography done with no air steps. Check them out!

On top of all that man of the members of Hot Club Stomp were invited to compete in an Invitational Jack & Jill. The leaders drew the names of the partner the were going to dance with a few seconds before the hit the floor! Check out our members doing some of the best improvisation lindy hop you’ll ever see!

A really big thank you goes out to the three ladies that make this event happen, Tena Morales, Nina Gilkenson, and Sylvia Sykes. They are three giants of our dance and are so amazing for giving all of us dancers the forum to showcase what we all love very much! See you next year at ILHC!

Hot Club Stomp members Laura Keat and Jeremy Otth were among some of the teachers of the weekend. Teaching everything from Fast Lindy Hop Technique, fantastic jam routines and the’re favorite teaching Balboa to upper level students. And a special congradulations to Laura Keat for competing with Kevin St. Laurent and winning 2nd place in the Professional Lindy Hop Contest!

Other Hot Club Stomp members, Nikki Marvin and Mikey Pedroza were also featured instructors of the weekend. Teaching some great classes in Partner Charleston, Swing out Technique and how to add a little Solo Jazz dancing into the the partnered Lindy Hop. They too performed and competed during the weekend, winning 2nd Place in the Slow Lindy Hop contest.

Shesha Marvin was also in attendance and was able to perform with his partner in crime, Kevin St. Laurent. Under the name of “Tips & Tops” these two dancers have created one of the most fun and innovative dance routines in a while. First with their Al Mins & Leon James Hat Trick Shim Sham. And now with their newest Hat Trick Tranky Doo! Both amazing and inspiring, Tips & Tops are starting the new trend in the dance world, the hat guy. Grab a hat, take a look and try it for yourself!

This years Lindy on the Rocks was an amazing weekend with a ton of social dancing, great classes and amazing performances! And Hot Club Stomp is proud to say that we were a part of the weekend! Camp Hollywood stared back in 1998, when Hilary Alexander decided that she wanted to put on a very special event and pay tribute to those vintage swing dances done in the Hollywood movies of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. The camp is filled with so much to do, you don’t just go to the event you live it. They have instruction vintage hair styles, vintage clothing, music, and of course dance classes. With Laura Keat, Jeremy Otth and Nick Williams all invited to teach at the event, you know it was going to be a Hot Club Stomp kind of a weekend!

The highlight of the weekend is the Pro Strictly Lindy Hop contest. Hot Club Stomp members Mary Freitag, Shesha Marvin, Adrienne Weidert, Nikki Marvin, Mikey Pedroza, Laura Keat and Nick Williams all took the floor to compete for the first place award. In the end Hot Club Stomp took the top two spots with Mikey Pedroza & Nikki Marvin fiercely gaining the 2nd place award. And Nick Williams & Laura Keat earning their 1st place with some astounding dancing!

Camp Hollywood is one of the biggest and best events in the swing dancing world. The entire group always has the greatest time there. It is our home town event and we would support it any which way. We would love to thank everyone involved in the organizing of Camp Hollywood and say great job! We’ll see you next year!

The 1920s was a turbulent time for America with the many people gaining much fortune and living an outlandish life. Speakeasies were places where you could indulge in life and entertainment out of the view of public eye. Dance being the main attraction of the day, we created 4 routines that were to show the entertainment of the 1920s. Nikki Marvin choreographed 2 spectacular chorus girl numbers that combined precession steps, beautiful woman and shiny nearly there costumes. “All I Do Is Dream Of You” was a classic all girl song and dance that drew inspiration from the classic movie “Singing’ In The Rain.” The other chorus girl routine, “Blazin,” personified the glitz of being a chorus girl. The “Hat Trick Shim Sham,’ choreographed by Shesha Marvin, takes an ordinary object like a hat and makes it dance partner. The final number was created by each member taking a piece of the music to choreograph then come back to the group and teach everyone what to do. This was super effective and spawned the Charleston based number of “Shake That Thing!”

In the 1930s and 40s America went through a transformation out of the Great Depression and in to a bold new world. This was evident in the dances of this era as well. The Big Apple, named after the city of its origin, is done with a large number of couples doing syncopated moves in a large circle that moves in, out and all ways around! Then Laura Keat and Jeremy Otth showed us what it means dance fast and fly through the air with ease. In another original number called “Bugle Call Rag.” Slowing things down a bit with Mikey Pedroza and Nikki Marvin showcasing the artistic movements of Tango, Rhumba, Waltz and Blues dancing to perform a number entitled “Tears.” Already renowned for his work on TV and film, Nick Williams brings us two more brand new routines. The first, a group Balboa piece made with help from renowned balboa dance experts, Bobby White & Kate Hedin, entitled “Sugar Foot Stomp.” The other was our finale for the 1940s with a classic Lindy Hop group piece done in the style of the great Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers. Swinging hard and flying high, we danced to the great Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra with, “Lunceford Special.”

Lastly we ended the show with a song and dance from the 1950s. Jeremy Otth came to swoon all the ladies with his rendition of the Bill Hailey classic, “See You Later Alligator.” Then we all went jumping to a sock hop, with another Bill Hailey tune, “Let’s Rip It Up!” We wanted to show the fun and care free attitudes that characterized the 1950s. The cool guys and the far out girls dancing together to the music moms and dads hated, Rock n’ Roll!

The entire show was an absolute blast! The entire group there for the Honeywell convention showed us so much love and support. I think everyone came up to us at one point to congratulate us on a job well done. We bring a level of preparation and professionalism to everything we do because of our passion for our dances and our American history. We would like to thank Steve Conrad and the Arizona Swing Dance Society for helping us with the show and for all the generosity we were shown while there. We will for sure be back for anything that involves them again!
